pour une personne belle :)

(One of my students sent me this e-mail. It makes all the trouble worth it. Nakakaiyak...hu hu hu)

hi there mlle! :D i just checked my email and i just learned about the class's plan to thank you...guess im too late to take part in that. but hey, i can always email you :D

i just want to thank you really... thank you ever so much!!! you are an inspiration to me and i really really loved having you as my prof. more than french you taught me a new way to view the world. your stories on how one can be an alien to his own home, how the world may come to confuse you as to who you really are, how reality bites and we should feel how it bites because that's the only way we'll learn how to cope with the pain and tha'ts the only way we'll come to figure out a way to avoid the pain. oh and i love what you said about the philippines being a young country and how we as filipinos need not rush into defining one filipino culture instead we should be proud with the many colorful cultures we have....oh and closing it with "what is culture anyway?" hehehe that was classic (i was so sure that day i will never forget you). :) you are very smart. you're like the me i dream to be...smart, confident, witty, strong, mature, and french-speaking :D

seriously, i loved your class and i would be more than happy to take it again...not french 1 but another class of yours...probably french 2.:D you inspired me mlle, you really did. im planning to take a minor in french and hopefully if i get confident enough i would want to take a chance on that scholarship to france :)

i have a confession to make...you scared me,,, yes you did. i had this feeling you do not like me and i had a feeling that you didnt like having me in your class. that feeling disheartened me at first but i managed to use it as a challenge...and that worked well.

there... said it :D

thank you ever so much!!! thanks a million!!!! merci beaucoup mlle!! have a great life, a great person like you deserves one:D you're a star and i wish that you'll get to shed your light on many others just like you shed some light on me..continue being what you are...an inspiration, a great teacher, a truly beautiful person. again, thank you! :D

Hundreds of Thousands Spill Out on the Streets

The mass protests 2 weeks ago have doubled. Police estimate 1 million rallyists all across France, while organizers claim 2.6 million (See posts below). The nation-wide strike paralyzed public and transport services and even shut dow the Tour Eiffel. Dominique De Villepin's government will not back down, nor will the protesters.
Prime Minister Dominique de Villepin, whose jobs plan for young people was the target of the nationwide protest, was already planning for the morning-after. He said he was open to discussing the details, but not the legitimacy, of his plan, and invited student and union leaders to meet when everyone goes back to work on Wednesday.
Center-left newspaper Le Monde published this map showing the extent of the protests yesterday.

As is the way of rallies and legally mandated thuggery, water canons, tear gas and arrests ran aplenty.

On choisit.

Now na!

The Black and White Movement is selling those infamous t-shirts. They also encourage you to do what you will with their logo.

I'm a bit peeved by their slogan though, "Now na!" sounds more like a request than a cry of outrage. And its so...text message-y, as if it were almost a joke.

If we were to change it to "Ngayon na!" wouldn't it sound more urgent?

You don't see the French whining "Can we please just move on?!?"

While the Philippines is undergoing a crisis of a country in the process of political development, a more stable and older democracy, France, is under extreme duress in balancing its labor policies with pressures of globalization.

The crisis, which certain pundits date back to the "No" vote of the EU constitution in May 2005, reached a crescendo of mass protests in 160 cities yesterday.

With an estimated turn-out ranging from 500,000 (government figures) to 1.5 million (organizers), students, trade unionists and left-wing politicians marched on the streets of France in protest of the First Contract Employment.

The CPE is seen as a solution to reduce unemployment by making the French labor market more fluid; making it easier for employers to hire and fire workers below 26 years old. While this practice is pretty much the standard operating procedure in the Philippines, France has a long tradition of "corporatism," the bargaining of State, Labor and Capital to arrive at political and economic decisions (more or less) beneficial for all. French Corporatism was central in the the re-making of modern France since the second World War, seeing the birth of national industries coincide with better labor conditions and overall increase in productivity and national wealth.

However, acceleration of global competition in the past decade has put pressure on this key bargaining mechanism, leaving smaller and smaller room for the Labor sector to maneuver.

The central tenet of democracies is the protection and enactment of the will of the People. A democracy is one where the People are active participants in politics, in shaping decisions that affect all. The State is the People, not any Administration. If you want a State that works for you, if you want a State responsible to you, if you want a State that reflects your values and intentions, you fight for it. You can be sure the French are fighting for theirs.

Ibagsak Ang Huwad na Administrasyong Arroyo!!!

Is anyone going to arrest me for expressing my seditious opinion? Oooh.

Now that the PCIJ Blog is on Little Sister's watchlist, these are worrying times. How soon 'til they start cracking down on the rest of the Pinoy blogosphere?!?

V for Vendetta : The Wachowskis Strike Back

(I've endeavored to keep this review spoiler-free.)

I don't know whether it was because it was preaching to my choir or whether I'm having a bad case of PMS, but this movie was so good it made me sob. And no, not because anyone died a painful, tragic death, not because anyone was parted from anyone, not because an innocent was murdered or an injustice commited.

There I sat, seated alone in the midst of strangers, sobbing so hard my hands shook. I never thought the image of folks spilling out on the streets would cause the hairs to rise on my nape and arms and my chest to feel so burdened by a gravity indescribable. Well, maybe the soaring music helped. Or maybe my own prejudices helped. This is the story of the World. Right now. This is a story of purging fears, paralizing limits. This is a story of love and redemption and rebirth. Lovingly shot and colored, passionately written. The Wachowskis, with first-time director James McTeigue at the helm, redeem themselves as true mavericks of American cinema with V for Vendetta.

Communists are dead, so what’s all the fuss?

An abbreviated discussion in our department has convinced me that Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s spin doctors are doing a stupendous job. They are doing their job so well it has got perfectly rational, thinking people agreeing with them.

These well-paid “political analysts”, some of whom have been awful, awful teachers of mine (one gave me an undeserved 1.75 – the lowest in my graduate career), resurrect and reinforce the paranoid fear of “Communists,” or “Reds” or “Leftists” of a bygone era loooooong over. Heck, the “threat” wasn’t so much real as it was imagined and reinforced to put Martial Law dissenters back in line.

So now the much abused CPP-NPA is again being whipped out of the toy box as a way to scare us usually sensible folks. The Extreme Leftists are conspiring with the Extreme Rightists to overthrow the government. Communists are getting in bed with Military Adventurists. Wha’da’pak?!? That’s like claiming Wacko Jacko impregnated (now ex-wife) Lisa Marie Presley and had a hoot of a time doing it!!!

Communism, as any legitimate (i.e. acceptable to all and sundry) political force, is dead in the Philippines. Its death was sealed when they started killing each other in the mid-90s. Its death was sealed when the intellectuals left their fold. Its death was sealed when their so-called leader went and enjoyed the comforts of “political refugees” in continental Europe. Its death was sealed when the Soviet Union crumbled at the feet of the wall in Berlin. Communism as a political ideology, as a way of life, as a mode of governance has long been discredited worldwide. You’re only a good Communist, when you’re a Chinese Communist – that is, sort of but not really. Not since Deng Xiao Ping in the late 70s.

So what’s with all this religious fear of Communists? We are deathly afraid of Communists because Americans were (and still are, if Dubya’s any indication). And what Yanks thought and said, Pinoys thought and said. Now that the Cold War is long over and Communism thrives in only 2 out of 200++ states, what the heck is the fuss all about? How can you conceivably imagine the Communists taking over at this day and age?!?

Aside from the fact that Communist military might is now only evidenced by their fierce and valiant attacks of cell sites, the following are more reasons why we need not fear:

Point no. 1 : Americans, Europeans and the Japanese have billions of dollars in investments in the Philippines. Can you imagine them standing by and let a bunch of hooligans flush their euros/dollars down the twah-lette? Not likely.

Point no. 2 : JoMa Sison is too busy smoking hashish and having all colors and shapes of women legally warm his bed in Amsterdam.

Point no. 3 : The Filipino elite IS the Filipino government. And the government is the sole, legitimate authority and disburser of Violence in all four corners of this sunny archipelago. Which means the government has enough firepower to whack Communists into kingdom come thrice over.

Which brings us back into the question of the Military. Is a military take-over likely? HECK NO. Quadrillions of Filipinos will troop to the streets, boom-boxes blazing, party-atmosphere dancing, before WE let a uniformed man (or woman) tell us what’s what. Like, duh.

And because I’m a language teacher, I am obsessed with words, how they are used, manipulated, morphed into different meanings to suit different purposes. The problem is conflating “Leftists” with “Marxists” with “Communists” with “Party-Lists” with “Civil Society.” I understand the red flags, or all sorts of multi-colored flag-waving, might be a little confusing. But come on. When you want drama and maximum effect, don’t you wear red?

I have nothing but respect for people who will risk their lives, their comfort, their time for a cause that can never pay them back. I happen to think that to be a Randy David or a Rissa Baraquel, one has to be a little cou-cou. A little insane. What rational being will risk man-handling for social justice? For civil rights? For good governance? For development? For change? What rational being will die for love of country?

To conclude, let me ask you this. Since you’re so afraid of them, have you seen an actual Communist? Have you met and conversed with one? I have (excluding all those ex-commie academics roaming UP). It was in a class in 2002, we were divided in groups for a seminar presentation.

One group of 2 young men, probably thinking themselves exceedingly maverick, decided to have a True Blue Member of the Communist Party of the Philippines come and talk to us in class. There was a buzz of excitement when we had learned of this special guest. What could he possibly say to enlighten us of the movement’s high-minded pursuits of equality and justice for all?

He came in, a man in his thirties of small stature, skin darkened from doubtless hours of walking under high-altitude sun. His eyes kept darting to the door at the very back of our small room, as if expecting the bogeyman to come jumping. He then awkwardly introduced himself, a couple of stutters here and there. He reached for the whiteboard marker and started scribbling on the board. He paused in between scribbling and explaining the Marxist doctrine. Scribble, cough, nervous scoping of room and back door. I don’t remember the details of what he said, but I remember thinking he didn’t say anything I didn’t already know and could’ve done a much better job lecturing. If we had waited with bated breath, we would have asphyxiated waiting for enlightenment.

Vive la Démocratie!!!

Youthful ideals and democratic rights led to the confrontation of hundreds of students and the French gendarmes in Sorbonne University last Friday. The police used tear gas to disperse the 3-day sit-in.

The students were protesting agains the new labor law permitting employers to indiscriminately fire employees below 26 years old.

Le Contrat Première Embauche or the First Contract Employment allows companies to hire young people for a two-year trial period, and fire them without cause. This new policy is meant to spur employment by making the labor market more "fluid." France has been dominated by socialist governments and policies for the past few decades, ensuring secure employment conditions for citizens. French labor unions are also notoriously active.

In the past decade however, France has seen an increase of unemployment. In 2005, it peaked at 10%, the highest since 1999.

Now that the white young folks have joined the desperate cries of black young folks, is the state paying closer attention to a crisis slowly creeping? Is the continental socialist model finally giving in to the pressure of a more "flexible" labor market comme aux États-Unis? It is certainly showing symptoms. Will the cradle of le contrat social finally succumb to TINA (There is no alternative)? On verra.

Yes, there are plenty of idiots on the internet

You know it, I know it. And having to deal with them is an unpleasant, time-wasting, sometimes hilarious experience. Since I am an ebayer, and Ebay Philippines is growing by leaps and bounds as I write this, I have been dealing with more and more morons.

Case in point, this kid in Cebu wants to purchase a pair of shorts for P199:

Kid: can u use ocs as the courier?can i pay u thru gcash?

Now it clearly states in the item description that I only accept bank deposits as payment. Or cash upon pick-up.

Me: I can only ship through 2go or air21, payment through BPI deposit. Kindly read the item description carefully for other instructions. Thanks.

Kid: may i know ur shippng rate for cebu?

Again, the item description indicates P90 for shipping to the provinces.

Me: Shipping to Cebu costs P90. You have to bid on the item first to complete this transaction. Thanks. Oh, and by the way, since you're in the province, BPI will charge you P100 for interbank deposits. Your total expenses will be the skirt + shipping + BPI charge.

Kid: really?!so i will b paying more than 300 for a used shorts? =(
no discount? =(

Ebay is not a tiangge. But some folks like to think so.

Me: Sorry no discounts. Too bad you're in Cebu.

Kid: excuse me?!i was born here& i love this place & vry mch proud of it.
i wudnt mind if i had 2 pay 4 the shipping!!ur d only prson dats not considerate enough 2 accept for a 5% or even just 20php dscount (esp if theres a bank charge)

At this point, I surmised I am dealing with a 12-year old.

Me: When I said "too bad you're in Cebu" It wasn't meant as a derogatory remark. I meant it means you will be incurring extra charges as opposed to being in here in Manila where the skirt is. I love Cebu. I am often there because my boyfriend works there.

In any case, nobody is pressuring you to buy the skirt. You needn't buy anything. Ebay is a bidding system, which means the highest bidder able to comply with seller policies will win and purchase the item. Some sellers are more than willing to give discounts. I, however, peg my starting price at the lowest possible amount I am willing to afford.

I suspect you're a newbie. I suggest you read Ebay selling and buying policies to avoid unecessary...hassles both on your part as buyer and our part as traders. Thanks.

Kid: my gosh!!!who are you to explain to me about eBay???!!!! (no one dats not as smart as you shouldnt enter?) i aint no dense being, u know.
(if u were in the states, ppl wud smack u silly)
the charge for mnila & cebu is not large compared to the intrbank charges wc i know the extra cost is 100php. more than the shipping rate, right???
i know i needn't buy anything on ebay, you dont control my financial expenses, its just when u said that "remark" too bad you're in cebu, of course anyone will think it as odious. you should have said something about the bank (it isnt reasonable, etc) coz i couldnt agree with you more.
so PLS watch what u say next time.
thanks too. =)

*you probably work at a call center or a computer company since youre in front of a pc 24/7.

Now it is a Sunday and I am relisting all my items. This exchange of e-mails lasted for about an hour. I was tempted to respond again, but I was afraid any caustic remarks might fly over this kid's head.

Nobody tops this other dude/lady (I don't know for sure because his/her nick is perdro). S/he won 3 e-books for P45 total. Mode of payment is simple enough: Smart pasaload.

Me:
You won all three Robin Schone ebooks. Kindly e-mail me for details.

Perdro: okay give the me the details i want 3 free ebooks not recipe pls. after i pay u pasaload okay

Recipe? Huh????

Me: Mode of payment: SMART Pasaload.

3 ebooks x 15 = 45

Key in (my cell) space 30 and send to 808
Key in (my cell) space 15 and send to 808

I will e-mail you the Robin Schone e-books this evening when I get home after I receive your payment. Thanks.

Perdro: send me na lang yung globe mong cell i will pay tru globe auto load na lang.

Perdro: i just send u load of 15 pes so send me first the lover ebook okay afterwards i will pay the three e books tommorow after i get load on my cell okay

After winning an item, a buyer is given 1 week to complete transactions. At this point we are on our second week. Still no full payment of P45 freaking pesos.

Me: I just e-mailed you The Lover early this morning. Its a txt file, you can open it with Notepad.

Perdro: mayron ka bang globe cell i am using kasi globe not smart i am just using my brother cell smart just to pay u if u have globe i will pay the other 2 ebooks i own u okay

Me:
It clearly says SMART on the mode of payment. Maybe you can ask a friend or a family member to give me the pasaload.

I should've given you a negative feedback already, pero ano ba naman yung 15 pesos di ba?

Me: Kindly read the indications first before bidding. It clearly says on the item description that the file is not a pdf. As regards the price, no one twisted your arm to bid on my ebooks. As of the moment I believe I am the only one offering the Schone copies at the lowest price. But that's really beside the point.

I have absolutely no problem if you decide to forgo purchasing the other 2 ebooks. Like I said, what's 15 bucks?

In case I'm not making myself absolutely clear: you don't have to purchase the 2 other ebooks. It's completely fine with me. Let's just call it quits while we're ahead won't we? Para wala nang sakit ng ulo.

Perdro: okay yes sure but no bad fedd back okay lets forget the two ebook okay but if u really cant wait for the payment okay so be it kasi palagi ko nakakalimutan yung no. mo kapag lumalabas ako para mag load nang globe ko see kaya hindi ko malagyan ng load ang celphone mo ng 30 pes okay so if u want to end okay but dont give me neg.feed back okay but just give one positive fedback para sa lover ebook i pay okay thanks but if i got load i dont promised but if i got load i will pay my utang to u see suwerte ka nga yung iba ayaw magbayad ng load hindi sila nagreresponse sa mga email ng seller see ako i am always response sa mga seller see thanks

At this point I am ready to tear out chunks of my anit. After a few days Perdro sends me the rest of the pasaload.

Perdro: there i pay 30 pes load now send me the ebook i bid on u okay plus i want some freebie ebook not recipe okay plus my fedback all three of them okay

Ano daw?!?!?!?
